We're not talking about some vague concept of adding value. We're talking about a deep commitment to enhance the lives of those you teach. Why is this so important? It is the single most effective tool any teacher can employ. Think about your own life - if you call a company and they just want to make money from you, you can tell instantly can't you? But if you call a company and they're willing to do whatever it takes to make your life easier, solve your problems, meet your needs and answer your questions - don't you just love it?

Broaden your network - Once people get a job they tend to drop many of their earlier friends and simply focus on work and family. My motto is to never let your network go because some day you might need a broader group of friends. In fact, part of your career goal should be to continue building your network. This helps to increase your visibility but at the same time, more people will know what your skills are and these are the ones who might someday point you in the direction of a new career opportunity. At the same time, be sure to extend your network as far as possible and to include a wide and diverse group of friends.

golden teacher Everyone knows by the time they're in 3rd grade that it's teacher's pet who has the honor of cleaning the erasers, wiping down the blackboard, and replacing stubs with fresh, long white pieces of chock that felt amazingly smooth as your fingers slid lightly over their cool hardness as you placed them neatly in the chock tray. Mrs. Conroy smiled at me as she arranged the pages of each student's best cursive writing on the bulletin boards flanking both sides of the clean blackboard. We had everything in place for tomorrow. It would be a great day. And I was, indeed, a good girl who had learned the hard way to wiggle her toes a few months ago with the encouragement of the physical therapy heroes.

School for me was not the most inspiring place. I was quiet and retiring on the surface but a secret revolutionary developing a silent but burgeoning dislike of authority in all its forms. I had a couple of special friends but was never invited to join the 'in' crowd. My personality was still forming. I had no way of impressing it on anyone. I had zero marketing capacity so I could never sell my coolness so that there would be buyers.

If you have to leave the class or event for some reason quietly apologize and go to the side and quietly leave the room if necessary. Do not wander about and distract or talk to people. And while we are at it. Shut off those cell phones. If you go back into the group, go to the back and quietly resume. Under no circumstances voice an opinion in a class or social instruction group. Do not voice an opinion in class. Try to focus on how this teacher can expand your dance and maybe social horizons. Do not compare openly to other teachers. Do not complain about how a movement is presented or that it is too difficult or easy.

Over the years, I could never seem to pinpoint what my issue was and so I continued to acquire more and more education. While the additional education certainly helped and my career progressed, I still found myself frustrated. Education wasn't the only golden key to success. Something was missing, I seemed to be drifting. What now?

golden teacher growkit The spring water for the baths are from the property. Esselen Indians use to bathe in these waters hundreds of years ago. The water from the natural hot springs are pumped up from below the ground and are considered healing. I've seen people drink the water even though it has a slight smell like sulfur. Strangely as a kid when I use to melt sulfur and other stuff from my chemistry set I use to always get a cold after accidentally inhaling the fumes. But here I have only had good experiences at the baths -- no side effects at all from the sulfer, people even drink this water for health (I tried it twice).

This experience in nature is a far cry from my usual surroundings in the City of L.A. Sometimes huge wall length reflective mirrors are exposed by withdrawn curtains. The room seems to double in size and the outside lighting adds a unique dimension. A beam of light shines in stirring the room. There is an old finely tuned antique classy black piano in one corner of the immense space and in the opposite corner a wonderful stereo system -- music is playing softly but will change tempo radically several times in the next 45 minutes. Sometimes a rug, soft mats or pillows cover the entire smooth shiny wooden floor.
