golden teacher growkit This experience in nature is a far cry from my usual surroundings in the City of L.A. Sometimes huge wall length reflective mirrors are exposed by withdrawn curtains. The room seems to double in size and the outside lighting adds a unique dimension. A beam of light shines in stirring the room. There is an old finely tuned antique classy black piano in one corner of the immense space and in the opposite corner a wonderful stereo system -- music is playing softly but will change tempo radically several times in the next 45 minutes. Sometimes a rug, soft mats or pillows cover the entire smooth shiny wooden floor.

The emphasis on intent is important in tai chi because the use of strength is very different than other martial arts. Tai chi uses slow, soft force to deflect or divert an opponent's energy instead of meeting force with force. This allows time for your mind to contemplate the movement and imagine the movement in your mind before your muscles actually move.

I've done the same thing. I've invested more money than I care to admit to learn how to grow my business. And, I grew my business to a point that many would consider incredibly successful. But, what I didn't realize is that I was growing the business on a cracked foundation. Why? Because I listened to others more than I listened to myself. I tried to model others, more than I created a unique model that worked for me. I did what I thought I should do rather than what was 100% right for me and my life. I allowed some of my decisions to be made from my ego, rather than my heart.

One thing I learned in my years working in schools as a teacher and administrator is that if you want your students to learn something, the best way to make it happen is to teach it to them. This sounds pretty simplistic. If I wanted students to learn to solve a mathematics problem, I taught them the steps to solving that kind of problem. Then we would practice it. This was all a part of the curriculum.

golden teacher growkit I will share with you one of the most powerful dreams of my life. I was studying at a library table with my friend, Joy. It was kind of dark. There were many empty tables in this library, which was shaped like a theater in the round. I noticed that a middle-aged woman in a brown dress, her hair in a bun, was quietly standing beside me. As I looked at her she gestured to me to follow her. Joy never looked up from her books. I followed the woman down some stairs toward the center of the theater. In the center of the stage was a brightly glowing, golden pyramid, about fifteen to eighteen feet high. There was an open trapezoidal shaped door in the center of one side. Beside the door stood a blonde, blue-eyed, tall thin man wearing only a loin cloth.

So, I've been on a journey of learning to listen to myself at a deeper level. And, I invite you to join me on this journey, too. I want to share four of the ways I've been deepening my ability to listen to my self. And, conveniently, they spell S.E.L.F...

Amazing to me people manage to get up this early (7:00 a.m. or earlier) to participate in movement. People in this free flowing movement class are probably 17 -- 70+ years old. Everyone is silent before we begin. With awareness we crawl slowly around the room and begin, at the level of micro-movements, to slowly stand up. I usually stand with knees slightly bent.
