When phrases were agreed on the Catholic aspect, Protestant leaders were invited into the talks. The structure also recognised the validity of the Protestant Church and others, however, it gave particular standing to the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. Following the top of the nice Warfare in 1918, issues of Irish independence and the partition of Ireland again came to prominence. By early 1916, at least 210,000 Irishmen had enlisted; 1/three of the UVF joined and, though Ulster supplied more than half of the Irish recruits, 57% of those that came from Ireland have been Catholic. The truce had little effect in the north as violence peaked in the primary half of 1922, after the Anglo-Irish Treaty confirmed the partition of Eire into Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State. Just earlier than the truce that formally ended the Irish Warfare of Independence, Belfast suffered a day of violence known at the time as 'Belfast's Bloody Sunday'.
