Start directly: You have an idea for a movie: To create a community page for your movie idea write a "working title" for your script into the search field, then search, a page will tell you that the page you searched does not exist of course, then click create page, read the text that appears. enter your idea and don't forget to save.

Movie Play is script writing on movie scripts where everybody can write something. By submitting an idea you admit that everybody can use it in every form. You are welcome as an author: Click Edit in the top right corner of any script and contribute your ideas. If you want to work more with this site read: How to use Movie Play. Keep copies of what you write also on your computer.

Then create a new movie script. Still on the page with the Example Script just type your project name or working title into the search and click search and if it tells you that this site does not exist you click on create page.

How to use Movie Play

On Movie Play you are asked to come up with movie ideas. Whatever is on your mind. Even if it is just a small idea.

Starting a movie idea on Movie Play:

type a working title into the search field, search, then click create page, read the text that appears. Don't forget to save.

The new page comes up with a preconstructed movie structure that will help to organize the movie lateron. Hit on save once before you start to write something then you see that this Example Script gives you a structure of chapters. Remember after saving you have to type "go" in the textbox and then click Save again or just type the "go" into the textbox and hit return.

Remember when you start a movie script here it is not your movie script. It is everybodies movie script. And remember, make a copy of the text and keep it in a textfile on your computer. Because everybody can write also means everybody can delete.

If you have some ideas for a movie you can start a new script now, but at some point you really should read the next chapter about writing etiquette on Movie Play.

Editing

This is the practice quide to editing etiquette and how the scripts are formated. For instructions in how to write a good movie script in general see How to write a movie script.

When can I delete something that others wrote?

First rule for deleting text of others is: Have the highest respect. And treat it like even if you do not like it others might come and like it. and so it is often better to leave a note why you think some idea should really be discarded instead of deleting it. If the page becomes to long it might get unreadable and you might have to delete ideas. This could become necessary. So look critical to your older ideas. If some author convinces you for example that an idea is not good you can take it out. If somebody writes some junk in the script that has nothing to do at all with script writing for the script. Of course erase it. Unless it is only a little joke from one of the authors to lift the mood. I mean real spam you can delete.

If somebody has written a hint somewhere that has long been followed then this hint can of course also be deleted.

After some time a rearanging of the scenes might be necessary. As long as you do not delete things sorting them around should not be to much of a problem for the other authors. So especially when things demand to be sorted, and everybody would say that, then of course just rearange without telling why you did it. If you have a problem with somebodies sorting, sort it back and leave a small note why you think it must be sorted like that. We are all intelligent humans, if something happens chronologically wrongly after something in the movie script just because of the way we work here, then of course you can sort it.

You are allowed to also talk about the script on the script page itself. Even in the scenes. but keep it short. So also these "comments" have to be sorted for example being deleted if necessary and just generally be edited when we edit the script. Be friendly with other peoples writing and don't be to harsh when your comments are deleted. Don't forget the script is a text everybody can edit and we all try not to work against the ideas of the other one here. We come here for the ideas of the other writers. Maybe often it will be good to keep more possibilities in the scripts and decide about them much later sometimes maybe even there can stay some things open with multiple possibilities and everybody can decide for him or herself. Follow up users might might be interested in many ideas.

To every movie script page there is a talk page, you find the link on the top of every script page. So you can use this page for wider discussions and talk about the script. Also the talk pages have to be generally editet like giving good titles and chapters for different discussions or deleting older comments of course. But again maybe follow up users might want to also read this discussion.

If you get into an unsolvable problem because you and the other authors can not come to one idea to follow, then start a new script that is similar but with your version of the idea. That means if you can really not solve which idea is the right one make two movie scripts.

Note that on the talk pages you use chapters to define topics and when many discussions start to fill the page a good descriptive heading for each chapters becomes important.

Delete discussions when they are out-of-date. Discussions can often get left lying around on a talk page long after the issue is no longer relevant. It's usually a good idea to write "I think this is now resolved" if it is your discussion and leave it on the page, but sooner or later it's time to just blow away the old discussions (they are of course preserved in the editing history).

If you register you will get a little user page that you can edit. You are asked not to edit other peoples user pages of course.

The art

Usually it is considered as bad practice to write about colours and lighting in a movie script that you want to sell. But if you are writing a script for yourself of course it is good practice to already plan on the lighting and the colours. while you write the scripts. But now comes the modern practice of thinking about Art, which tells us that there are different important aspects of a movie that are not described in the pure story. So modernity makes it that we have to consider aspects of the filmic art and modern non story art while we work on the script.

If you want to know more about these modern aspects of movie making I am talking about here, there are some really interesting articles about the art and theory behind modern movie making.

Imortant, how to strike text or leave comments

On Movie Play, by the way also on Wikipedia you can write special "words" into the text when you edit, and then on the site after you have saved it these words will translate to do something with your text. You must always use two special words, one for starting something and one for ending it again.

Striking

If you do not like something in a script you should not delete it because somebody else has written it. But it is absolutely ok to strike through the text, because the author who wrote it or other authors can easily remove the striking and the text is there again.

And the special word for striking is: <s> and the text will be striked out and to end this you must write </s> and there the striked ends. These special words all just have effect after saving. You can also use <strike> striked out </strike>

comments

And after you stroke something out you might want to leave a comment behind the striking. So despite to writing long comments on the script page it can be a good idea to use a special word that makes the text apear in the editor page, but not in the original page after saving. And if somebody looks in the editor she or he will see it there. This is called a comment and to do that you write: <!-- And then this will always be seen in the editor but not in the page after saving -->

Sice this is a movie related page it is ok to end the comments on. FU. as an homage to the movie the odd couple. Where one of the main characters Felix Unger causes puzzeledness by signing a note FU .

Other possibilities to format the text

Hey, what happened to my question mark ¿

The rest of this page you must not necessarily read, it is just about some more things you can do with special words. This becomes interesting if you register and get an own little "user page" and you want to use colored texts there.

making chapters

In the example text you see that ==Chapter Title== will make a chapter in the text in the normal mode. To rearange the scene also move the word ==Scene== above each scene chapter along with the text that you move.

text color

For example: you can color the text you are writing in lightblue. For that you use a special "computer" word at the point where you want to start the blue color and than you put a word at the end of the text to tell the blue color not to be used anymore.

So it is always something like: <special words> and then what you write here is changed and you must stop the change with the end word and that is always with a / so in this case it would be </special word> and now the text does not have the given feature anymore

that looks like this <span style="color: lightblue"> now the text is blue after saving the page </span>

Expert users say you should use these colors selden because to much colors really destroy the readability of the texts. If you want to use many colors you can create a free account and you get your own user page to present yourself. There you can use many colors.

Instead of the word lightblue you can use: grey, green, maroon, purple, blue, red, orange, yellow.

images

The use of imges is not allowed on Movie Play. We are very sorry for this, but german government is slow in these things so if a user posts a copyright protected image that he does not own then Movie Play can get sued. If the law changes we will allow posting images then.

Arrow

&rArr; gives you this arrow:

⇒ Wow.

Box

If you just start a line with a space you create such a box.

just a space at the start of the line.

Or you get a box with a text color if you write <pre style="color: green"> Green text in a textbox </pre>

 Green text in a textbox

With <code> This long sentence is used to demonstrate text wrapping. This additional sentence makes the text even longer. </code> you get this:

This long sentence is used to demonstrate text wrapping. This additional sentence makes the text even longer.

Using the special words in a text

If you ever need these special words but want to have just the real writing of this programmed word and you want that on the page it is not translated then put before special word and after the special word. These special words make the special words inside not being used but written as they appear.

To create a new movie script copy Example Script, type your project name into the search and then click on create page and paste in.

Yeah so far, have fun editing.
